Beacon of Light… Bhumika Patel

blog pic.jpg

Hi all

Last year I met some amazing individuals who are Beacons of Light, they bring light where it is dark. Their compassion to serve humanity inspired me.

One such individual was Bhumika Patel.  She loves Indian fashion. She employs tailors from local villages in india to creates beautiful Indian fashion. She then sends the proceeds to India, to create schooling for underprivileged and orphaned girls in India. Bhumika has a vision to help these girls.  She explained to me that she has helped to fund installing toilets into the schools and is now working on raising more funds to further improve the living conditions.

During Bhumika’s visits to India, she came to see how harsh some of the living conditions are. She visited two Ashrams for orphaned and underprivileged girls and it brought her to tears. These girls come from slum equivalent areas in the forest, where they still have an outdated style of thinking that girls should not be educated. Education is also not readily available to those who cannot afford it, and so this combined effect leaves little chance for these girls to obtain even a basic education. However, feeling sorry for them wasn’t going to be much help – something had to be done!

I interviewed her to find out what we can do to help. Here is her interview, enjoy…

Beacon of Light: Jo Phee

Hi all

I have met some amazing individuals who are Beacons of Light, they bring light where it is dark. Their compassion to serve humanity inspired me.

Last month I completed Yin Yoga teacher training with Jo Phee. She is a senior Teacher Trainer in Yin Yoga. She was bought up solely in Traditional Chinese Medicine and to add to her knowledge she studied at the Singapore College of Traditional Chinese Medicine and Academy of Traditional Chinese Medicine. She also graduated from the Bihar School of Yoga.

In addition to learning how to teach Yin and Yang yoga flow, I felt inspired by her integrity.

Here’s what she had to say:

What inspired you to do what you’re doing?

“I felt I was looking for something different from what I was already doing. Yin Yoga allowed me to do that and to teach it.”

What has been the psychology behind what you do?

“All bodies are different because of skeleton variation, which means not all poses will look the same for each person. In many yoga classes poses are expected to look the same (this is called alignment) by placing the hands and the feet in the same place. However, this can cause injury. Yin Yoga helps to release tension in our body’s tissues – ligaments but poses will look different for everyone.”

I have been going to classes where alignment is very important. Meaning I look in the mirror to make sure my hands, feet and body is positioned in alignment. What should I do now?

“Yoga is not just about doing Asana (poses). There are many aspects to yoga. If you like what the teacher is teaching plus doing Asana (postures). You should judge what is right for you. If the teacher comes and corrects your alignment – you can allow it and go back to your shape, you decide”

What’s your vision?

“Educate yourself, so you know and have all the information to yoga the correct way.”

What piece of advise would you give us about yoga?

“We don’t know everything, when we are learning anything. Be respectful and courteous to the teacher you are learning from.”

Jo Phee ended the teacher training with a quote from her teacher which I would like to share with you.

“Be humble and curious when learning”.

Beacon of Light: Mohammad Cahyo

Hi all

Along my journey I have met some amazing individuals who are Beacons of Light, they bring light where it is dark. Their compassion to serve humanity inspired me.

Mohammad Cahyo is an architect and has created something amazing from his travels. It all started from his love for travelling and taking photos of the places he visited which started as a hobby when he was a university student. In every place he travelled he created relationships with the local people, he made many new friends from each place he visited, and they become his family, he says “they are my brothers and sisters.”

When he heard about the Tsunami and earthquakes hitting regions of Indonesia. He managed to created a team of people to help by using his skills as an architect and his love to help his brothers and sisters.

This image has an empty alt attribute; its file name is canva-2-2.jpgCahyo now gives talks and runs workshops to help educate people on preventative measures to be taken when a disaster hits.

I interviewed Cahyo and this is what he had to say:

What inspired you to do what you’re doing?

“Due to Indonesia being located within the ‘ring of fire’ as part of ‘pacific ring’ of fire and the meeting of several tectonic plates beneath, Indonesia quite often  experiences  earthquakes and volcano eruptions causing massive fatality and destruction of housing and settlement in the city. In some areas earthquake occur together with the tsunami. We have to care and pay close attention to this issue, to decrease the number of fatalities and damage caused by natural disasters in the future.”

What has been the psychology behind what you do?

“I’ve travelled to many places in Indonesia and creating relationships with many people with a strong bond as a close friend, or family. Once a natural disaster hits in their area I want to help to rebuild their courage and spirit after the disaster, and with my team to help them to rebuild their houses and their environment. The most important thing is to educate the people of Indonesia about disaster preparedness and learn from what we’ve already experienced in helping the survivor.”

Have you faced any challenges and how have you overcome them?

“I believe the challenge is always there to be solved. In the society and community where people have lost everything, the challenge is to give them hope and create trust. As volunteers we stayed with the survivors in the same area and conditions, never treating them as a victim but treating them as family, as a friend.”

What’s your vision?

“We have to provide knowledge (one of the ways is to put it in book form) and create a system to train people about disaster preparedness with only one simple vision, to make fatalities and damage as minimum as possible.
Our traditional society have very good knowledge about natural disaster preparedness and mitigation, but nothing is written down. My vision is to record and document as many traditions and local wisdom of our traditional society, so it could be spread and learn by the future generation.”

If you would like to learn about Cayho and would like to get involved, please email Cahyo at nomaden4madcahyo@gmail.com

What piece of advise would you give us, the public?

“We cannot stop natural disasters but we can arm ourselves with  knowledge: so many lives wouldn’t have to be lost if there was enough disaster preparedness.”

Beacon of Light: Chloe Dreadz

blog pic.jpg

Hi all

Last year I met some amazing individuals who are Beacons of Light, they bring light where it is dark. Their compassion to serve humanity inspired me.

Chloe Dreadz was such an individual. At 22 she began the journey of curiously exploring ‘self’. When she discovered yoga, it was an immediate love affair. In 2017 she launched a 20 hour Yoga for Teens teacher training. This course is for teachers, parents, yogis, or anyone interested in working with young people, as a platform to share everything she has learnt along the way to continue to spread the gift that is yoga to the next generation.

I attended the teacher training and I loved it. Having two children and a love for yoga myself, I wanted to  learn how to bond the two together in my teaching children and also bring into my parenting. Her genuine care and compassion for humanity was very clear and empowered me even more in my motto “I aspire to inspire”.

Here is her interview, enjoy…

Beacon of Light, Fitra, Andrea and Najla

Hi all

I have met some amazing individuals who are Beacons of Light, they bring light where it is dark. Their compassion to serve humanity inspired me.

I met some young ladies who created a project on self-Love as part of their year 10 assessment at school. They know how important Love is and it all starts with you loving yourself. I do believe Love is the answer and it always start with loving ourselves. I interviewed Fitra Rahima, Andrea Agnetta Gunadi and Najla Nurhaiqa and here are the details on what their projects are all about.

Fitra explained  “Love Myself, Love Yourself is a project where its goal is to make a dance video that promotes the issue of the lack of self-love. The dance should also encourage its audience to accept who they are and be grateful with they are given with. This project is heavily inspired by my love for dancing as well as my concern to people who lack self-love.  It is very sad to see that a number of people have lost their lives due to the lack of appreciation towards themselves. Thus, I believe that fact needs to be changed.”

“I am Andrea Agnetta Gunadi (16), who is currently studying at Global Jaya School. A Campaign about Self-Love! is a project I have created, in the hope of opening people’s minds about accepting themselves. The campaign teaches the audience about the general knowledge of what it means to have self-love, low self-esteem, and how to accept yourself. The campaign includes informational posters, an interactive board – which lets the audience write down some things they like about themselves and lastly, a showcase of photographs that involve teenagers who accept one another regardless of their differences. I truly hope that this project is able to reach out to everyone who struggles to find self-love within themselves, as an eye-opener for the benefit of themselves and the social community.”

Najla explained: Self-love starts with taking care of yourself.  She wrote a book with instructions for skin care. Her point being, if you look good on the outside, then you feel good on the inside.

Here is the interview, enjoy…

Beacon of Light, Neelam Patel

Hi all

Last year I met some amazing individuals who are Beacons of Light, they bring light where it is dark. Their compassion to serve humanity inspired me.

One such individual was Neelam Patel. Neelam is part of  The Red Box Project and this organisation helps in tackling period poverty. When she told me about the project, I thought young girls knew about how to use sanitary towels and had access to them, however Neelam informed that this is not the case. Here’s a video that shows how it has helped girls.

This project has filled over 2,000 boxes which is now freely accessible to young people in educational settings across the UK. Allowing access to adequate menstrual protection.

I thought she could you inspire you. Here is what she had to say…

What inspired you to do what you’re doing?

“I saw an article in the Harrow Times about the Red Box project and how it was started by the Harrow coordinator” (Harrow Middlesex, UK). ‘I thought what a great idea and contacted head officers ask how to get involved”.

What has been the psychology behind what you do?

“I want to give something to the community and what better than to help girls not to miss school because of their periods.  Having two daughters of my own made me think – how they would feel if they couldn’t afford sanitary products?”

What challenges have you faced and how have you overcome them?

“Working full time is challenging and finding time to drop off donated products to the schools and collecting donations from our donation points.  I work from home so tried to do what I could in my lunch break or during quiet periods during the day.  Also my house was full of products so it took over our lives.  I managed to find a volunteer who was willing to take on some of the supplies for her to keep in her garage.”

What’s your vision?

My vision is fulfilled as the aim of the project was to get red boxes filled with sanitary items to all schools and colleges in Harrow. We achieved this by supplying all the institutions that needed a box.  The government has now pledged to provide funding to all primary and secondary schools for sanitary products from April 2020. I now need to find another charity to get involved in.

Who is your Beacon of Light?

This year I will be blogging about Beacons of Light, people who are inspiring.

A Beacons of light in my life has been Mother Theresa, she was born in Albania. Her mother’s words to help the poor stuck with her and hence she became Mother Theresa. A mother to all, she not only helped the poor but her humility was an inspiration to all.  The feeling of love eminated from her and apparently when she walked into a room she had a peaceful presence.

There was an ocasion when she was at a radio station in the US to give an interview about the opening of one of her centres. The presenter asked how could he help her in promoting her work and raise funds.  She said she wasn’t there to promote her work, but she was there to just to talk about the centre. In the end, she saw that the presenter just wanted to do something to help. She asked him to go out the next morning and find someone who was homeless and tell them that they are not alone.  You see, she saw that in poor countries there was poverty of food and shelter but in the western world, people were starved of Love. At the end of the day, that’s all we all want.

Martin Luther King, Jr was another Beacon of Light, his transformative work to help African Americans to become free with his famous words ‘I have a Dream’. With those words he inspired African Americans to their version of freedom.

Nelson Mandela was another Beacon of Light. He started of as a terrorist but the years he spent in prison forced him into silence and he realised he had to end aparthied.

Hellen Keller lost both her sight and hearing at just 19 months old. She Became the Most Famous Disabled Person in the World. Although deaf and blind, Helen Keller graduated from college. She wrote about her life and became an activist for the disabled.

I listen to Jay Shetty, Tony Robbins, Wayne Dyer, Eckhart Tolle who are inspirational motivators who still inspire me and the world.

Having attended various retreats, courses and workshops around the world I certainly received a re-education. My teachers taught me new tools and I use them when I need to. It brought me to becoming a Wellness Ambassador. I am grateful and truly blessed.

It’s important to surround yourself with people that inspire you, that can bring you up and teach you how to pick yourself up when you feel down. If I wasn’t inspired, I don’t think I would like to inspire.
