Time to Take a Breather…..

blog pic

It’s always good to take a break especially when we feel overworked or when we feel overwhelmed with our lives.

That’s the first question to ask…WHAT WOULD I LIKE TO DO RIGHT NOW?

Things you can do:

    • Putting up your feet. It always feels nice to put up our feet especially when we may be on them for long periods.
    • A 10 minute break to move your body by dancing.  When we are in one position for long periods it can lead to feeling lethargic.  Getting up and actually moving our bodies gets oxygen moving to our brain and body. Moving our bodies is very beneficial not only to the body, but also to our mind and spirit. That means feeling well, physically, mentally and emotionally.  This will leave you feeling energised.
    • Exercise
    • Going for a walk.
    • Stretch your body and breathe. When we are in one position for a long time,  our muscles become tight and stretching allows our muscles to become loose and relaxed.  Deep breaths allow oxygen to flow to your whole body and feeling centred in yourself allowing inspiration to flow.
    • Meditate
    • Listening to your favourite tunes.
    • Read a book.
    • Eat a healthy snack to bring back blood sugar levels. Blood sugar can drop when we spend endless hours focused on one thing and can lead to low energy.
    • Watching or listening to an inspiration video to inspire you.
  • Talk to a friend.  This may give you a different perspective on what you are working on or  you may talk about something completely different.

Remember it’s okay to take a break. You never know how it will benefit you unless you give it ago. Taking a break allows us to come back to the job at hand with renewed energy and sense of purpose.

Therapeutic Recreation

blog pic

Recreational therapy, also known as therapeutic recreation, is a systematic process that utilises recreation and other activity-based interventions to address the assessed needs of individuals with illnesses and/or disabling conditions, as a means to psychological and physical health, recovery and well-being.

The Benefits

It helps to restore, remediate and rehabilitate a person’s level of functioning and independence in life activities, to promote health and wellness as well as reduce or eliminate the activity limitations and restrictions to participation in life situations.

Recreational therapy is a type of therapy that engages an individual or a group of individuals in fun activities such as music, sports, news, or bingo to enhance their functioning, independence and well-being.

Therapeutic outdoor recreation programs are helping individuals with disabilities build the confidence and physical skills needed to participate in a wide range of sports and recreational activities. … Activities include water sports, summer and winter competitions, and fitness events.

Some of the general benefits include adaptive recreation skills, time management education, socialisation, pain management, physical conditioning and exercise activity, wheel chair training, attention, memory, perception, orientation, adjustment to disability, stress management, and community resource education.

Click here on National Rehabilitation Information Centre for more information on recreational therapy and how it can help.

Types of Recreational Therapy

There are so many types of recreational. Some have been listed below:

  • Therapeutic horseback riding. …
  • Adaptive swimming. …
  • Special Olympics. …
  • Art therapy. …
  • Music therapy. …
  • Pet therapy. …
  • Vision therapy

So on…….

I think we could all do with some type of recreational therapy to recuperate from our daily lives and it’s amazing that it can help people to recover and return to wellness. Go out and find what can help you to return to wellness and bring balance.

Having Fun

blog-pic

We have become a serious society and forgotten to have fun.  When we look at children, they can make fun out of anything.  Playing with a cardboard box becomes an adventure. They pretend they are in a spaceship or driving a car on a race track.

There is an abundance of things we can do now.  Going out for a walk, bouncing on a bouncy castle, going to the cinema, jumping in muddy puddles on a rainy day or enjoying a hot chocolate and cake at our local coffee shop.

Why is it important to have fun? We feel happy and when we feel happy, we are in a good mood.  Which is better, feeling good or feeling bad?  It is also taking time out for ourselves. We have forgotten to do that because we make excuses, we don’t have time. WE HAVE TO MAKE TIME. Even if it’s 10 minutes a day. Remember, Life will pass you by and before you know it life as you know is over.

Most people put off having fun in their life. Is that you? It may mean you need to experiment and see what fun means to you. Take some risks and go beyond your comfort zone. Remember a journey starts with a single step.  Take your first step to having fun and discover wonders await you.

Goal Setting: New Year, New You!

blog pic

Illustrated by Lina Patel

How was last year for you?  Did you achieve all your goals? Did you set goals last year?

Why set goals?  It’s a way of allowing yourself to create whatever you would like for yourself and allowing yourself to have it. You can prove to yourself that you truly are the creator of your life.

How to Start?

You need to ask yourself the right questions.

Where do you want to be?

What do you want to create?

Who do you want to become?

You can start with something small.  I started with creating parking spaces where ever I traveled. Then, I thought “if I can create parking spaces, what else can I create?”

Impossible becomes I’m Possible

So, how can  you be smart when setting your goal?

Ask the right questions………

Where are you now?

Set an intention of what you would like.

Every time you have a thought that you can’t have the GOAL

Let go of that thought and say to yourself
“I allow myself to have THE GOAL with ease”

arrow-down

SEE, FEEL, HEAR

Yourself having it

Using your all senses

AS IF YOU ALREADY HAVE IT.

IMAGINE WHAT YOUR LIFE

 WITH HAVING ACHIEVED THE GOAL

By doing this you will prove to yourself that you are the creator of your life, you begin to take responsibility for your life and all becomes possible.

Wellness Approach

Wellness is a conscious, self-directed and evolving process of achieving your full potential. Wellness is multi-dimensional and holistic, encompassing lifestyle, mental and spiritual wellbeing, and the environment. Wellness is positive and affirming.

It’s okay to say what wellness is but how do we achieve it? It’s a bit like describing water but just because someone is describing water does not mean you know what it is.  You will not know what water is until you experience it for yourself.

A lot of time we think wellness is outside of ourselves.  When everything around falls into place and becomes well, we then feel well in ourselves.  Below is a diagram which shows areas of our life that we want to fall into place before we can be HAPPY.  Yes that’s right be HAPPY.

Actually happiness starts with us, what’s going inside us.  When we have actually able to be present to what is happening now, we then create wellness in ourselves and all around us.

It’s what you do in your present that will redeem your past thereby change the future.

Paulo Coelho

In the The Wellness Approach, it deals with this and shows you how you can achieve wellness within yourself, you will regain your power and so much more.

Find the key to happiness in my book, The Wellness Approach: Lasting Lifestyle Change Made Simple.  If you’re interested you can download the book from Amazon on the following link. I would love for you read it and give me an honest review.
